How Thick Should Pavers Be?

Paver thickness is one of those details that never comes up until it causes a problem. Choose pavers that are too thin for the job and they crack, sink, or shift under the weight they were never meant to carry. Choose thicker than you need and you spend more than necessary. The right thickness is simply the one that matches how the surface will be used, and once you understand the few standard options, the choice is straightforward. Here is how to get it right.

Why thickness matters

A paver has to spread the load placed on it across the base beneath, and resist cracking when weight lands on a single point, like a car tire or a heavy planter. Thicker pavers carry heavier loads and distribute them better. That is the whole principle. A patio only ever holds people and furniture, so it does not need much. A driveway holds vehicles, so it needs considerably more. Matching thickness to load is what keeps a surface flat and intact for decades.

The standard thickness options

Concrete pavers generally come in a few standard thicknesses, measured in millimeters.

30mm (about 1 1/4 inch). These are thin overlay pavers, designed to be installed on top of an existing solid concrete slab rather than on a gravel base. They are ideal for resurfacing a sound but tired patio or pool deck without tearing out the old concrete. They are for pedestrian use only, not for vehicles.

60mm (about 2 3/8 inch). This is the standard, all-purpose thickness and the most common choice by far. A 60mm paver is rated for vehicle traffic, which makes it suitable for driveways as well as patios, walkways, and pool decks. When in doubt, this is the safe default for a residential project.

80mm and 100mm (about 3 1/8 to 4 inch). These heavy-duty pavers are built for serious loads: commercial driveways, parking areas, delivery zones, and anywhere trucks or industrial traffic are involved. For a typical home they are usually more than necessary.

Matching thickness to your project

• Patios, walkways, and pool decks (foot traffic only): 30mm works over an existing concrete slab; 60mm is the standard choice on a proper gravel base.
• Residential driveways (cars and light trucks): 60mm minimum. This is the key rule most people need. Never put a thin pedestrian paver under a vehicle.
• Overlaying existing concrete: 30mm, specifically because it adds minimal height and bonds to the slab.
• Commercial or heavy-vehicle areas: 80mm or 100mm to handle the load.

A note on porcelain and natural stone

The millimeter rules above are for concrete pavers. Porcelain pavers are a different material, dense and extremely strong, and are commonly made around 20mm thick while still performing well in the right application. Natural stone thickness varies by type and supplier. If you are using a material other than standard concrete pavers, follow the guidance for that specific product rather than assuming the concrete numbers apply.

Thickness is only half the story

It is worth remembering that even the correct paver thickness will fail if the base beneath it is wrong. A 60mm driveway paver still needs a properly excavated, compacted stone base and good drainage under it, or it will settle no matter how thick it is. The two work together. The bottom line

For most homes, 60mm pavers are the right answer, since they handle everything from a garden path to a driveway. Step down to 30mm only when overlaying an existing slab for foot traffic, and step up to 80mm or more only for commercial or heavy-vehicle loads.
