Spare Pavers After a Pool Deck Installation: What to Keep

Spare Pavers After a Pool Deck Installation: What to Keep

AI-generated storage illustration, not a completed Perfect Pavers project.

Keep sound, full concrete pavers that represent the sizes, colors and borders in your finished pool deck, together with their product records. Agree the quantity with your contractor when ordering, separately from material allowed for cuts and breakage. At completion, record what you actually receive and where the contractor places it. There is no universal spare percentage, and stored units cannot be promised to match the deck’s appearance after years of exposure and use.

For a Broward or Palm Beach County home, include this handover in the scope of your pool deck pavers installation. A useful reserve needs both suitable units and enough information for a future installer to identify them.

Separate installation allowance from owner spares

An order can include more material than the measured deck area without leaving a useful reserve. Cuts around the layout and breakage during installation consume material. Ask the proposal to distinguish the installation allowance from the sound, full units intended for you after the work is complete.

The CMHA Guide Specification for the Construction of Interlocking Concrete Pavement leaves the owner’s maintenance-material amount to be specified for the project in Part 1.07. Part 1.05 calls for materials to be protected from mud, dirt and foreign material. This is a guide specification to tailor to the job, not a law or a fixed percentage of spares.

Ask how the contractor will address any difference between the planned reserve and the usable material remaining at completion. Put that arrangement in the proposal before ordering, including any separately priced supply or handling. Do not assume that an unspecified surplus is already included.

Request a quantity for each part of the design

Give the contractor the approved layout and ask for a proposed reserve by component. A single total can hide a missing border color or one size in a modular pattern.

  • Field pavers: Identify the units used across the main deck and distinguish each size in a mixed-size layout.
  • Border pavers: List their product, color and size separately, even when they come from the same collection.
  • Other distinct units: Identify any separately selected accents or special pieces and ask whether their replacement supply belongs in this order.

Have the contractor explain how the proposed quantities relate to your actual design and available storage. Ask whether the supplier’s packaging affects what can be ordered. The decision is a project-specific balance between a useful assortment and the space needed to keep it accessible.

A chipped edge or dirty offcut is not equivalent to a sound full spare. Any pieces the installer considers useful for a limited purpose should be identified separately, outside the agreed full-unit count.

Keep an identity record and a location map

Ask for product information while delivery packaging and order records are still available. A folder labeled only with a general color description leaves too much to guess later. Retain the following for each distinct product:

  • Manufacturer, collection and exact color name as recorded on the order.
  • Nominal size, thickness and finish, rather than dimensions guessed from a photo.
  • Batch or production labels, where available, with readable photographs.
  • Invoice and supplier information, plus the approved sample record if one exists.
  • The deck area where that product was installed and the corresponding stored group.

If a label is missing or a batch cannot be confirmed, record that gap. Do not recreate a plausible number or assume that every package belonged to one batch.

Photograph the completed pattern from ordinary, safely accessible viewpoints. Include an overall view and closer views of borders, corners and changes between sizes. A simple annotated photo can connect each product name to its location. These images preserve the arrangement; phone photographs are not a reliable color standard.

Before approving the order, arrange a consultation through our paver installation planning process and bring the layout, product selections and proposed storage location. Ask to review the reserve by component and who will handle delivery and handover, so those decisions can be included in the written scope.

Agree storage and handling before delivery

Have the contractor choose a stable, accessible ground-level location and agree who will deliver, place and, if necessary, relocate the reserve. Discuss access for household use and future service visits before materials arrive. An available corner is not automatically a suitable storage location.

Keep the reserve protected from mud and dirt using the arrangement selected by the professional. Ask about the actual site’s exposure and the product’s storage instructions. A plastic cover alone does not establish suitable moisture conditions. Leave heavy handling to the responsible crew rather than planning to reorganize the stacks yourself.

Keep original labels and invoices in a protected household file, with digital copies. Store the inventory with them rather than relying on packaging left beside the reserve. Share the folder’s location with whoever manages the property.

Close out the agreement with an actual inventory

Before leftover materials leave the property, review the finished inventory with the contractor. Record the usable full-unit count for each product and size, the storage location and the person receiving the materials. Photograph the stored groups without moving them to inspect hidden faces; ask the crew to verify condition during handling.

The written agreement should identify who owns and receives the leftover materials and what happens to damaged pieces, offcuts and any excess beyond the agreed reserve. Ownership should be settled in your actual agreement, not inferred from a general statement about construction leftovers.

Compare the final inventory with the agreed handover quantity. Record any difference and the agreed response, with responsibility for the next action. Keep that record with the installation documents so a later homeowner or installer can understand what was supplied.

Expect appearance to change

The CMHA Operation and Maintenance Guide for Interlocking Concrete Pavement recommends keeping a small stockpile for repairs and explains that weathering, wear and staining can change installed pavers relative to stored spares. It also identifies an experienced contractor as a resource for deciding how to approach reinstatement.

Even correctly identified spares are not a promise of an invisible replacement. Later production batches also should not be assumed to match. Product records help establish what you have; the installer still needs to compare the actual materials and discuss the likely appearance with you before work proceeds.

A finished installation reference

Our Pompano Beach pool deck and driveway installation documents full installation in both areas, with a prepared and rebuilt base, slope for drainage and secured edges.

Use the finished surface as a reference for the kinds of pattern and location photos worth retaining. A project photograph cannot establish which spare products another property needs.

Share the record before future work

If later pool service or repair may disturb the deck, share the inventory and pattern photos before the work is planned. Spares are available materials, not a repair specification. The installer still needs to investigate the underlying cause of any problem and plan the layout and scope.

Professional paver repair services address that assessment and the work it requires. Our explanation of how pavers are professionally restored provides further context; a stored pile does not determine the correct remedy. Leave lifting, extraction and repairs to the responsible professionals.
